Primary Election
The Primary Election is an election to determine which candidates will qualify for the General Election for a given party. In Iowa you must be a member of the political party of which you wish to vote for in order to participate. This is known as a "closed primary." The primary election is held on the 1st Tuesday following the 1st Monday in June of each even-numbered year.

*Please note that the county candidate filing period starts on Monday, March 2nd, 2026, and ends at 5PM on Friday, March 20th, 2026. County Candidates file nomination papers with the County Auditor.
Voter Registration
Pre-Registration deadline for voter registration closes at 5PM on Monday, May 18th, 2026. Persons wishing to participate in this election who register to vote after May 18th, 2026, will be required to provide proof of identification (Example: current and valid photo identification card with an expiration date), AND proof of residency in their voting precinct, when they go to the polls on election day , or when they request an absentee ballot. Other provisions may apply. Persons not registered to vote by May 18th, 2026, should expect a longer processing time at the polls on election day.
Absentee Ballots
Absentee Ballots will be available beginning Wednesday May 13th, 2026 for mailed ballots and in-person voting.
- March 24th, 2026 is the first day an absentee ballot request form may be submitted for the Primary Election. (Click HERE for a Primary Election Absentee Ballot Request form).
- The last day an absentee ballot may be mailed to a voter for this election is Monday, May 18th, 2026. (Postal delivery is now around five days each way.)
- In-Person absentee voting in the office of the Franklin County Auditor closes at 4PM on Monday, June 1st, 2026.
- Requests for absentee ballots must be in writing and should be mailed or delivered to: Franklin County Auditor, PO Box 26, Hampton IA 50441

Extended Hours
Extended and Saturday hours are available for voter registration and absentee voting in the Jones County Auditor's Office. In addition to regular hours of Monday through Friday 8AM-4:30PM, extended office hours during the 2026 primary election season will be as follows:
- Friday March 20th: 8AM-5PM
- Thursday April 16th: 8AM-5PM
- Monday May 18th: 8AM-5PM
- Friday May 29th: 8AM-5PM
Saturday May 30th: 7:30AM-3:30PM
- Tuesday June 2nd: 6AM-9PM
- Friday June 12th: 8AM-5PM
